What is affiliate marketing?
Have you ever considered getting into affiliate marketing? Maybe you have but you don’t really have a clue where to start. Then again, you might not even know what it is. That’s ok, I find that a lot of people I mention it to reply with “what’s that?”. Affiliate marketing is the process of marketing another business’ products or services in order to receive a commission, generally upon sale. I say generally because more often than not, affiliate marketing requires a sale but not necessarily. Some businesses will offer you money for something as simple as a phone call or click to their website. Here you would be getting paid per lead. With a good amount of targeted traffic and the right marketing strategy, you can really make money with affiliate marketing.
Your commission rate can vary greatly. It could be a 5% commission, it could be a 75% commission. It all depends on what you’re advertising and which affiliate network you’re going through. Instead of a percentage, some businesses will offer you a set price per sale or lead. Most hosting companies offer a set price per sale but some offer a percentage and some will offer reoccurring commission.

How to become an affiliate marketer
You can go to any one of these sites and apply to become an affiliate. Some of them will accept pretty much anyone while others have a bit more of a review process. As of the time of writing this, I’m an affiliate on Click bank and ShareASale. Click bank is a huge reputable company and you can probably find anything you want to promote on there. They also have high payouts, averaging around 50% commissions.
Before committing to anything, you can click on “Affiliate marketplace” in the main menu to get a list of all the products and services available for promotion. You’ll see the menu on the left hand side with all the different categories that you can click on to display the sub categories. You’ll get a list of all the products or services with details including the average commission for each.
Getting started as an affiliate
To get started, you’ll need to create an account by entering your personal information, banking information and account information. Once you’re set up, you’ll be provided with a tracking ID that you use for links from your website or blog to any vendors websites that you’re promoting. This is how Click bank and any other affiliate networks trace sales and leads back to you and provide you with your commission.
It’s usually a good idea to choose to promote something that you are interested in, especially if you’re going to be blogging about it. If you’re trying to sell something that doesn’t really interest you at all, it’s going to be more difficult to get that content out there and will sound forced. It’s also not a bad idea to purchase the product for yourself and see if it’s worth your time to promote. So far, anything that I’ve promoted, I was first a client of. I only promote products and services that I find valuable or think that others would find valuable. I don’t want to be the reason for anyone buying crap. When you’re just starting, if you can find something that works well with your website, try out a market that isn’t so competitive.
